Systematic global mixing and melting in lunar soil evolution

چکیده
[1] We present a revised model of soil evolution constrained by the recent LSCC data for lunar soils. In addition to an observed universal increase in feldspathic components in the finer fractions of soils [Taylor et al., 2001, 2003a, 2003b], both differential melting and lateral mixing processes appear to be required during the evolution of lunar soils. We propose mare-highland mixing of a significant glass component along with a preferential melting sequence for agglutinitic glass formation of: glass > plagioclase > pyroxene ilmenite.

Using Magma Mixing/Mingling Evidence for Understanding Magmatic Evolution at Mount Bidkhan Stratovolcano (South-East Iran)
Mount Bidkhan stratovolcano is located in the central Iranian volcanic belt. It is composed of several types of pyroclastic deposits, lava flows and intrusive bodies. Textural and chemical characteristics of plagioclase phenocrysts from the eruptive products volcanic edifice, record complex magma mixing events over the lifetime of the volcano. Evidences such as xenocrystic high Al+Ti clinopyrox...
متن کاملA Mass-balance Perspective on the Origin of Agglutinitic Glass
Précis: Glass composition of individual agglutinate grain is determined largely by the composition of a few soil grains, heterogeneous with respect to the bulk soil, impacted by a micrometeorite. Common perception or consensus: Lunar agglutinates form upon micrometeoritic bombardment of lunar soils and consequent preferential melting of the (otherwise homogeneous) finer fraction, scavenging unm...
متن کاملUse of Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis and Radiative Transfer Model to Derive Lunar Mineral Abundance Maps
Introduction: Determination of mineral composition of the lunar surface is fundamental for understanding the origin and geologic evolution of the Moon. Such compositional information can be used to examine the magma ocean model of lunar crust formation and to investigate lunar crustal structure, basaltic volcanism, crater/basin structure and ejecta emplacement, as well as lunar soil mixing mech...
متن کاملLunar surface aluminum and iron concentration from Galileo solid state imaging data, and the mixing of mare and highland materials
Apollo X ray spectrometer data provide chemical information for 9% of the lunar surface. Galileo solid state imaging system (SSI) multispectral data for the Moon are employed to reexamine the long-accepted positive correlation between lunar surface reflectance (or albedo) and aluminum concentration, derived from Apollo X ray spectrometer data. The overall goal of the analysis is to quantify the...
متن کاملHighland contamination in lunar mare soils: Improved mapping with multiple end-member spectral mixture analysis (MESMA)
[1] Multiple end-member spectral mixture analysis (MESMA) was applied to the Clementine UVVIS global 1 km multispectral data set, and the resulting highland material fraction image was used to investigate highland contamination of mare surfaces by impact cratering. MESMA decomposes each pixel with the number of end-members fewer than the number of the spectral bands of Clementine UVVIS data. Th...
